My air conditioner was not blowing cold today when turned it on. I called Cool Air USA to come out and service my unit. Their guys showed up within an hour, which was very nice. They were very friendly and they had my problem diagnosed in no time at all. (Ami) was the lead technician and definitely had the used car salesman vibe. It was obvious from the start that their service techs get commission for extras that they sell. They initially told me that I was going to need a new capacitor and some Freon. After further diagnosis I was also told that I was going to need a Schrader Valve and a hard start kit. Well I know a little about HVAC and asked how much they wanted for the hard start kit. They told me that they wanted $175. Well the most expensive hard start kit that I know of is $50 retail so they are marking their parts up more than 250% because lets face it they are not buying hard start kits from Gemaire (their parts distributor for $50) I negotiated the price down to $125. Then I started to ask about the other prices and I was floored when I discovered $149 for a Capacitor and $125 for a Schrader valve. This was pure highway robbery! The cost of these two parts for them is no more than $65 combined, so that is more than 300% mark up. It was my fault for not asking the prices up front but let me tell you this company is taking advantage and really trying to get every dollar they can from their consumers. I understand that they have overhead, an office staff, a building, vans, workers comp, don’t get me wrong I get business and what it costs to run one. But when their technicians are at my home for 40 minutes and my bill is $555 for what really is about $150 worth of parts and Freon and another $65 at most for the labor I am telling you this company does not have their customers best interests at heart! Really wanted these buys to be my go to HVAC company here in Florida but at the end of the day I was severely let down. I am all for companies making margin on jobs but $340 margin on a $210 hard cost is INSANE!!!! Take my advice and call another company before you call these guys to get price gouged!!
